We are Dana Thiercof & Myron Franklin.
We met in August of 2012 in a woodworking class that Dana was attending and Myron was teaching.

In December of 2014 we moved to Roseland, Louisiana from Oakland, California to spend more time with Myron's family.
In April of 2015 we planted our first garden together;
a wide ranging variety of organic and heirloom crops. Our hopes were always to create community, grow food, and expand our vision to our home states of California and Tennessee. Thinking about fresh food as fuel, "sugar" being a term of love in the south, (and to honor our cats who enjoy belly loving), we named our vision "Belly Sugar Farms".
In 2016 we returned to California where Dana completed an Associate of Science in Sustainable Agriculture, and Myron returned to his classroom. We registered Belly Sugar Farms as a business in Oakland, and began teaching families and individuals how to grow their own food.
In June of 2018, we celebrated our wedding with 140 incredibly communal and loving people and an immense amount of delicious food.
In the summer of 2019 we planted our first test garden in Tennessee and participated in a number of farmers' markets and festivals. In 2020, unable to work in our classrooms due to Covid 19, we spent more than six months in Tennessee. We erected two hoophouses to extend our growing season and contoured our rows into permanent beds that rotate crops annually. In 2021, 2022, and 2023 we continued to expand the farm and the variety of crops that we grew. We participated in sales in multiple venues, sometimes up to four times per week. We helped reach out to inform the community about the Fentress County Farmer's Market Association, and we doubled the number of vendors that participate in the market each year. In 2022 we purchased a property where we are planning to build a nursery/greenhouse, retail store, and commercial kitchen. 2023 and 2024 have been dedicated to developing that property. Stay tuned for updates.
Our goals are: to eat freshly picked and vine ripened produce, prepare creative & unique dishes showcasing that produce, to share the bounty we grow and devise, and to encourage food justice in our communities.
